Very simply, psychogeography involves exploring a town or city, often on foot, and picking up the atmosphere or energy of the environment.
When the term was first coined, in the 1950s, it was a way of sensing the psychological effects of the manmade geography on the people who live and work there, but it has come to mean much more than that.
Psychogeography has been seen as a way of tapping into mystical alignments in the land, including ley lines. Some magical practitioners use it to remythologise the urban environment, bringing to the surface poetry and stories to let visionary possibilities within the landscape reveal themselves. Psychogeography has inspired much writing and art.
In this livestream talk, Lucya Starza will look at the history and literature of psychogeography. She also explains how to go about doing it.
