Ivy Northage was a renowned British medium who taught at The College of Psychic Studies in the 1970s. She often reminded her mediumship students of the importance of self-care. As a medium – whether aspiring or professional – we are in service, not only to Spirit, but to our fellow humans. As such, we may find it easier to focus on giving, and, in doing so, neglect our own needs. However, to maintain a healthy connection with Spirit, and to be able to serve in our best capacity as a medium, it is essential to take care of ourselves first. Self-care for mediums is an essential part of the job!
As students at The College of Psychic Studies know, mediumship is a wonderful, affirming and uplifting practice. However, it can also be emotionally and energetically taxing. We must honour this and listen to our needs. Neglecting self-care can lead to burnout and a weakened connection with our spirit guides. It can hinder us from progressing on our path of mediumship development. Self-neglect is a very real pitfall in mediumship practice. A sweet reminder, then: Here's how we can practice self-care as spiritual mediums.
Remember to keep grounded
Firstly, it's crucial to maintain a healthy connection with your body and emotions. As mediums, we spend much time communicating with Spirit. This makes it even more important to remain grounded and centred in our body. Grounding ourselves properly enables us to maintain a clear connection with Spirit, and to receive messages from spirit guides. Physical practices such as yoga, walking, Tai Chi and gym classes can help us stay grounded and present. Also, recall those lessons on how to ground yourself properly from our mediumship courses!
Practice stress-release techniques
When we're stressed or overwhelmed, our energy can become dense and blocked. This makes it challenging to receive messages in our mediumship practice. Incorporating regular breaks, spending time in nature, or taking a holiday or spiritual retreat, or even a digital detox can help us clear our mind and recharge our energy. Scheduling in regular breaks - whether short or longer - enables us to maintain a clear and open channel to receive messages from Spirit and our guides. We can also incorporate journaling or therapy to process any emotions that arise during our mediumship sessions.
Develop strong boundaries
Establishing healthy boundaries with our clients and spirit guides is such an important aspect of mediumship. As a medium, we may feel pressured to give messages to everyone who approaches us. We may feel like we're constantly working! However, neglecting our boundaries can lead to burnout or feeling drained. Establishing clear boundaries and communicating them to clients and spirit guides is an essential aspect of self-care - and you'll learn how to establish and maintain yours in our mediumship courses.
5 ways to practice self-care
Now that we have established how self-care can support our mediumship practice, let's summarise the ways that we can incorporate self-care in our daily life…
1. Practice mindfulness
Mindfulness practices like meditation, yoga, or deep breathing can help us stay grounded and present during mediumship sessions. We can also incorporate mindfulness into our daily routine by taking a few minutes to focus on our breath or body sensations.
2. Take plenty of breaks
Taking decent breaks between mediumship readings can help us recharge our energy and prevent burnout. All it takes is a few minutes to stretch, go for a walk, have a snack or chat to a friend in between sessions. Additionally, be sure to take breaks in the form of spiritual retreats every so often.
3. Spend time in nature
Spending time in nature can help us connect with the earth's energy and recharge our own energy. You can take a walk in the park, spend time in your garden planting flowers or herbs, or wander in the local woodlands. Nature helps us replenish our spirit.
4. Establish clear boundaries
Establishing clear boundaries with clients and spirit guides is essential for maintaining our energy and preventing burnout. Communicate your boundaries to clients and spirit guides and stick to them.
5. Practice self-compassion
Self-compassion is essential for preventing self-criticism and burnout. Treat yourself with kindness and understanding when you feel as if you have made a 'mistake' or feel overwhelmed.
Just remember that self-care is essential for mediums to maintain a healthy connection with the spirit world. Taking care of yourself is not selfish but necessary for your well-being and ability to help others.
