'How do I protect my energy?' is a question we often come across at The College of Psychic Studies. In fact, we teach the essential art of energy protection in all our beginners' psychic and mediumship courses. That's because knowing how to protect your energy is fundamental to our wellbeing, not just as aspiring psychics and mediums, but as anyone who interacts with other people. Grounding and protecting our energy keeps us balanced, centred and 'safe' in our intuitive work, it also enables us to progress as psychic mediums. By establishing a firm and 'safe' foundation for our psychic mediumship practice, we facilitate a stronger connection with higher energies.
What does it mean to protect your energy?
Energy protection is an essential aspect of our psychic hygiene. It comprises two main techniques: grounding and protection:
- Grounding is the practice of connecting to the Earth's energy. This can help to stabilise our energy field, which, in turn, increases our capacity for centredness, balance and presence in the physical body.
- Protection, on the other hand, refers to the practice of safeguarding ourselves from unhelpful or unwanted energies or entities that may be present in the environment or during our psychic work.
Essentially, the techniques of grounding and protection help us to maintain a clear, stable energy field while also preventing the absorption of unwanted, unhelpful energies. It is an essential preparatory stage in any psychic and mediumship work, and something that we should all be practicing on a daily basis.
What happens when I don't protect my energy?
Energy protection really is essential for our wellbeing, especially for psychics and mediums, healers, empaths, energy workers and intuitives. Grounding and protecting your energy can help keep out negative energy, maintain focus and clarity, and create a safe and effective space for spiritual work. We must learn how to protect our energy, otherwise we are vulnerable to the following issues:
- Absorbing negative energy: If we are not grounded or protected, we may pick up unhelpful or negative energy from our environment or from other people. This can lead to feelings of anxiety, fatigue, or other heavy emotions, and may even result in physical symptoms.
- Losing focus and clarity: Without proper grounding and protection, our energy field may become scattered or disrupted, making it difficult to maintain focus and clarity during psychic work or meditation.
- Ineffective psychic mediumship: If we are not properly grounded and protected, our energy may be too scattered or unfocused to effectively connect with higher energies, or to perform intuitive work for ourself or others.
- Unwanted spiritual experiences: In extreme cases, lack of grounding and protection can leave us open to unwanted spiritual experiences, such as psychic attacks.
How to protect my energy
As a developing psychic medium, healer, empath or energy worker, it's a good idea to build up a toolkit of energy protection techniques. Train yourself to use these as often as necessary to safeguard against unwanted energies.
- Visualise your shield: Imagine a protective shield or bubble around your body. This shield is made from a powerful material that is impenetrable to negative energy. Visualise your shield as a bright, radiant light, and feel its energy enveloping and protecting you.
- Crystal protection: Crystals such as black tourmaline, black onyx or amethyst are great tools to carry to protect your energy. You'll first need to cleanse and programme your crystal to absorb and transmute any unhelpful, unsupportive energy in your environment. Then, carry your crystal in your pocket or keep it nearby. Just remember to cleanse your crystal often, especially after any psychic or mediumship work.
- Grounding and centering: When we are properly grounded and centred, it provides a sense of protection. Visualise your energy being grounded to the Earth (see below), and then bring your focus inward to the centre of your body, where you can feel a sense of calm and balance. By connecting with your own inner strength and stability, you can create a protective barrier against external negative energy.
How to ground my energy
When we feel scattered, unable to focus or anxious and stressed, it's a sure sign that we are not grounded. The challenge is in recognising that we are ungrounded – easier said than done when we are so scattered and all over the place! Try these simple grounding techniques:
- Visualise your roots: Imagine roots growing out of the soles of your feet and extending deep into the Earth, anchoring you firmly to the ground. Picture these roots as strong, thick and sturdy, and feel them drawing up the Earth's energy and circulating it throughout your body.
- Mindful breathing: Take slow, deep breaths, and focus on the sensation of your breath moving in and out of your body. With each inhale, imagine drawing in fresh energy from the Earth, and with each exhale, release any tension or negative energy you may be holding onto. This can help calm the mind and connect you with the present moment.
- Physical activity: Engage in activities that involve direct contact with the Earth, such as walking barefoot on the grass, sand or soil, or sitting on the ground. As you connect with the Earth's energy, focus on the physical sensations that arise, such as the texture of the ground beneath you or the warmth of the sun on your skin. This can help you feel more grounded and present in your body.
Developing a psychic hygiene habit
As important as learning how to protect your energy is putting your knowledge into action! Develop a good psychic hygiene habit that keeps you grounded and protected throughout the day. This is important not just when you are doing spiritual work, but also when out shopping, or walking in the park. Of course, when we are new to the practice of energy protection, it can be challenging to remember to do it. Here are some tips that can help you establish your own psychic hygiene habit.
- Set an intention: At the beginning of each day, set the intention to stay grounded and protected throughout the day. This can help create a positive mindset and reinforce the importance of these practices.
- Practice grounding techniques: Incorporate the grounding exercises outlined above into your daily routine. Include mindful breathing, visualisation, and physical activity like walking barefoot on the Earth. By doing this regularly, you can strengthen your connection to the Earth's energy and create a sense of stability and balance.
- Use protective crystals: Carry protective crystals with you throughout the day, and set the intention that they will help shield you from negative energy. Remember to cleanse and charge them at the end of each day.
- Be mindful of your surroundings: Pay attention to the energy of the people and places around you, and take steps to protect yourself if you sense any negativity or imbalance.
- Take breaks when needed: If you start to feel overwhelmed or unfocused, take a break and engage in a grounding or centering exercise to help bring your energy back into balance.
